"Ride of Silence" Sarasota

Sarasota Bicycle Riders
Thanks to SMBC club the riders will be escorted by three FHP cars....one in front, one behind, and one to close intersections so we don't get separated.

I have registered the City of Sarasota as a location that will ride the "ride of silence"
This will take place on May 17th at 7 pm . Arrive at 645 pm for instructions Speed limit recomended is 12 mph on the road and on the sidewalk.
Reference to what the ride is about can be located at www.rideofsilence.org
It isn't a organized ride. This is a normal ride that is done in complete silence to remember the fallen bicycle riders in our area as well as the riders in the USA and the world. (also the survivors of accidents who are still riding).

The starting point will be , Start at Marina Jack's parking lot, north on U.S.41 to University Parkway, right on University Parkway. Split off to the right onto DeSoto Road, and then right onto U.S. 301. South to Fruitville Road and turn right onto Fruitville. Take that over to U.S. 41 and then south back into Marina Jacks's Parking Lot. This produces an approximately 9-mile route.

Riders should show up at least 15 minutes early, if possible, to be issued black or red armbands and to be given instructions on how to use arm signals instead of talking. Sarasota Manatee Bicycle Club ( Nancy )will be providing the armbands.

Before going on this ride please send a email to the list of officals below.
( all emails were captured from the website of the county or city )
Please explain that we want you to come out and ride with us and bring a friend to ride also.
This is a peacefull event honoring those who have passed away or were injured while riding a bicycle

"Alleycat" in Sarasota

UPDATE March 26th

The starting date is this Thursday March 30th at 630 pm.
Meeting point is under the Ringling Causeway Bridge this side by the pier.
Gather point without bicycles is a new metal gazebo.
Bicycles will be leaned against the underside of the bridge.
You will have to run/walk to get your bike and manifest.
10 checkpoints 1 hour time limit.
Bring pen or pencil. Pocket change for telephone calls.
If you don't know the city then you had better get a downtown map.
This is about reasoning and time management. not to mention down right gutz.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Well the time has come to open up the stale riding choices in the sarasota area. Stay tuned for a date and time for a alleycat.
This is just riding down the street whatever you want to call it with at least 10 checkpoints throught out the city of sarasota. all checkpoints are considered public property available to visit as a individual.

before someone else says they started it in Sarasota first and have the name already selected!! "Sarasota Urban Alleycat" it's not a scavanger hunt. and its not a group hug team effort. and its not a adventure race with paddles and off road trails to run through. Or a urban assault with required special gear lists.

There will be a cash prize for the fastest and the slowest. Waivers will need to be signed and delivered before leaving ( I mean just riding your bicycle around town )
Waiver will be made available for download to your printer from this website when time and date are posted.

Law enforcement is welcome an encouraged to ride in this little ride as it won't be a race. I'm not sure if those guys and ladies can actually do this type of thing?
You will need a pencil or pen to write with. A cellphone or pocket change to use a payphone. Check points must be done in order printed on manifest 1-10
There will be more than one manifest so don't follow your buddy.

Of course I don't have to explain about riding with a headlight and rear light! And we all know to ride a bicycle with a helmet. I wouldn't think of riding anywhere except on a sidewalk. The ride will be great with the sunsets we get around here!!!
